  • Registered as accommodation since 1610, the Petit Palace Posada del Peine is the oldest hotel in Spain. Its strategic proximity to the royal mail reception point made it a very convenient lodging for travelers arriving by stagecoaches and carriages. Once in their room, they found true luxury for the time: the comb of the Posada del Peine. It is here that our accommodation begins an intimate relationship with Madrid and its travelers that extends over the centuries with legends such as room 126, which was used to hide fugitives, or the ghost of the inn, represented by a lady dressed in black who has appeared to different guests. The current Petit Palace Posada del Peine consists of 3 different buildings, the most modern (nineteenth century) being the one on the corner, decorated with tiles and mythological motifs. It admirably preserves many original elements that any visitor can appreciate, such as the wooden beams of the reception or the brick walls. The stone floor of the reception is the same floor that was used in the original paving of the Plaza Mayor. The structure of the staircase and the stained glass windows used in the seventeenth-century renovation with the coat of arms of the Posada del Peine are original. The hand-painted tree observed in the reception scales through all the floors and rooms to bloom on the fifth floor. Decorated with rich ornamentation, the beautiful facade of the hotel is protected for its heritage value, highlighting the clock located in a gazebo that was added to the architectural ensemble in 1892 to commemorate the fourth centenary of the discovery of America. The breakfast cellar connects with a network of tunnels and waterways that lead to the Royal Palace. Without a doubt, 400 years provide many stories, legends, and events.

  • Perfectly located since its foundation, Calle Postas is a very suitable starting point to explore almost all points of interest in the center of Madrid, as the hotel is adjacent to Plaza Mayor and very close to Puerta del Sol and the Royal Palace, among other points of interest. There are a thousand plans to make from here. Plaza Mayor will allow you to delve into the history of its main places (the Casa de la Panadería, the Arco de Cuchilleros, or the statue of Felipe III), as well as stop at small bars to eat the typical calamari sandwich (La Ideal, La Campana, or Arrabal). You will also find gift shops (Bazar Arribas, Gritos de Madrid), century-old shops (Casa Yustas, La Favorita, Gato Negro), or the coin and stamp market in Plaza Mayor, which takes place on Sunday mornings since 1917. Mercado de San Miguel is a must-stop to observe the exterior of this iron building and the numerous tapas and gourmet product stalls you will find inside. And if you stay at the oldest hotel in Spain, you should also try the experience of dining at the oldest restaurant in the world, Restaurante Botín (Calle de Cuchilleros, 17), as attested by the Guinness World Records. El Rastro is the territory of urbanites, lovers of antiques, and the curious. A weekly market selling second-hand items, old books, clothes, kitsch objects… and a very unique atmosphere. Plaza del Cascorro and Ribera de Curtidores are your starting points to finish at Ronda de Toledo, which is the perfect place to return to childhood among trading cards, buying old comics, and countless objects.

History

  • Posada del Peine is the oldest hotel in Madrid, located in the heart of the city on Calle Postas and just steps from Plaza Mayor. The inauguration of Posada del Peine dates back to around 1610, that is, when Madrid had returned to being the seat of the court - after the brief Valladolid interlude - and the comings and goings of people had skyrocketed with the attraction of being able to do good business in a city that increasingly offered more opportunities of all kinds. It was founded by Juan Posada, who transformed an ordinary house on the old Calle Vicario Viejo (now Marqués Viudo de Pontejos) into an establishment for the rest of travelers and people passing through the city. Juan Posada had a keen eye when choosing the location, as it was not only at the door of Plaza Mayor, the most important in the town, but also neighboring the Casa de Postas, that is, the point of reception and dispatch of the royal mail of Postas and the arrival place of carriages and stagecoaches full of travelers arriving in Madrid either in transit or to stay. And what was the first thing they encountered? The strategically located Posada del Peine.

This street is named so because it led to the Casa de Postas, which was the point of reception and dispatch of the royal mail of Postas as well as the arrival place of carriages and stagecoaches. In addition, they were the establishments where the taking and changing of horses and assignment of postilions for the mail were carried out. But Juan Posada's market vision did not stop at just choosing a good location; he decided to give his establishment a point of distinction and he saw it clearly: a comb in every room for the use of guests! The comb in question hung from the sink so that no one could take it away and it could only be used while staying at the inn. As you can see, the custom of taking amenities and non-amenities from hotels also has a lot of history. As you have deduced, this was such a talked-about luxury that it ended up giving the inn its name, by which it is still known today.

The inn was a constant coming and going of people as it also had an unusual capacity for its time (it came to have about 150 rooms). Of course, not all were the same. The noblest ones were those facing the street, larger and better furnished with light and fresh air. The interior ones, on the other hand, are described practically as dark little holes without any comfort. In addition, there was a special room: 126. It was said to have a wardrobe from which a staircase led to a secret room in the upper part of the building, used for clandestine meetings to shelter fugitives, according to reports, but who knows... Other rooms were also connected to each other by passages to facilitate nocturnal escapades. In 1796, the then owners of the inn, the Espino brothers, seeing the continued success, decided to expand the inn with the adjoining house that faced Calle San Cristóbal. The supervision of the works was entrusted to the then royal architect Juan de Villanueva. They preserved some of the original passages that made the rooms that had them very sought after.

In 1863, a new renovation was undertaken that involved structural improvements until in 1891 a license was requested to build a new building and the adjoining one was joined, facing Calle Postas. The following year, a gazebo and a clock were added as a crowning feature to commemorate the fourth centenary of the discovery of America and with the intention of serving as an attraction. The building has always been so famous and emblematic of the city of Madrid that Camilo José Cela dedicated his speech upon entering the Royal Spanish Academy to it. However, after changing owners several times, in 1970, the hotel closed. It was reopened as part of the Petit Palace chain in 2005, respecting its facade, the three buildings that ended up composing it (the original is the central one), and, wisely, its well-known name. And the next morning, after a peaceful night of rest, the buffet breakfast served daily in an ancient cellar conquers the palate of travelers with a wide range of gastronomic proposals.

Staying here is, in short, staying in one of the hotel establishments with the most history in Spain, bearing witness to the feats of illustrious characters and whose walls, although renovated, have witnessed the unfolding of history.

  • So much expansion work and the fact that three buildings were joined made Posada del Peine become an amalgam of labyrinths and twists through which it was easy to get lost. But it also allowed for hiding and even facilitated nocturnal escapades through rooms that were interconnected. And speaking of those hiding places, this is where we come across the famous room 126.

Legend has it that in a wall of that room, in a wardrobe that served as a pantry, there was a door with stairs leading to the upper floor, although its narrowness was such that a person could barely pass through. It is said that this place was used to hide fugitives for clandestine meetings but also to conceal those who wanted to go unnoticed and even lovers.

It is true that no one knows anyone who can confirm the existence of that wardrobe or even the aforementioned room, but as is known, legends arise when the river sounds... And some say that the room, or rather the place to which the narrow staircase led, still exists, although it is an abandoned place. What is undeniable is that such a labyrinth must have been an ideal place to carry out all sorts of mischief.

  • But urban legend also says that Posada del Peine, besides holding the mystery of room 126, has its own ghost. There are not many verifiable references about this particular. At least it has not manifested itself on many occasions, and therefore, one must always speculate whether we are facing something real, mere suggestion, or assumption by witnesses. There are accounts of a waitress and a guest who claim to have encountered a lady dressed in black, a tenant who perhaps never left the accommodation, maybe out of fear of being discovered. Beyond the hearsay of legends or ghosts, what is undeniable is that Posada del Peine was a lively place where passing people coexisted with others who made it their permanent residence. According to newspapers from the early twentieth century, different events took place in the inn, such as suicides, fires, and even some accounts say that the Posada was a temporary hideout for some thieves and murderers. All this could have fed its legend or, at least, impregnated the place with such varied occurrences. If someone looks up, they can still see the sign with the name of the Posada and perhaps with a bit of luck, they may have the impression of seeing a figure through the glass of some balcony. If so, think that they have seen a ghost. The truth is that perhaps they have seen one of the few remnants of this guest who was afraid to leave Posada del Peine.
