El Puerto de Santa María: Gaditan essence between the sea and tradition
Petit Palace Santa María
On the shores of the bay of Cádiz, El Puerto de Santa María smells of tradition with a taste of salt and sea. Moreover, the so-called "City of the 100 palaces" allows you to stroll through a historic center filled with civil buildings and centuries-old wineries that serve the renowned local fino wine. With its sunsets by the Guadalete River, El Puerto de Santa María completes a picture that goes far beyond the sea.
One of the must-see visits for visitors strolling through El Puerto de Santa María is the Castle of San Marcos, a medieval fortress built on an ancient Muslim mosque that surprises with its perfect state of preservation. Various types of visits can be made, including audio guides, guided tours, and even wine tastings from the area.
Located in the expansion area, the Osborne Wineries are one of the most renowned winery brands in Spain. Here, since 1772, wines and brandies of excellent quality are produced. The visits allow you to learn about the production process of their best products and include tastings of wines, tapas, and the possibility to visit the Toro Gallery exhibition, where visitors will learn about the history of the famous Osborne bull, an icon of the Andalusian brand.
On the banks of the Guadalete River stands the family winery Gutiérrez Colosía. Visitors will be surprised, upon arrival, by its ‘cathedral nave’ structure that exposes the wines to the influence of winds and temperatures of the region. Of course, guided tours include an explanation of the production process and a tasting of six of their most well-known wines.
Food lovers have an appointment at the restaurant El Faro del Puerto, a reference of the local gastronomy since 1987. The establishment, led by chef Fernando Córdoba, offers a menu that combines traditional Andalusian cuisine with contemporary techniques. In addition to the dishes on the menu, it is possible to enjoy a complete tasting menu. It also has its own parking.
Within the Osborne Wineries, Toro Tapas represents a unique space: an old winery converted into a tapas restaurant based on seasonal products. From cuts of 100% acorn-fed Iberian to red tuna from almadraba, passing through traditional fried fish and the best cheeses from the Sierra de Cádiz. And all accompanied by an excellent selection of wines.
For those seeking a moment of disconnection and sun, La Puntilla beach is the perfect place. Located between dunes and next to the mouth of the Guadalete River, the beach stands out for its fine golden sand and calm waters. An urban beach with a family atmosphere that has several beach bars, access for people with reduced mobility, and a blue flag.
