Inaugurated in 1931, it is the first skyscraper in Madrid with 53 meters in height and 12 floors, which includes two buildings, one with a stone facade featuring a viewpoint, where the impressive breakfast room of the hotel is located, and a second building that houses the rooms, topped by a tower with a sculpture of the Phoenix, created by Vicente Camps and emblem of the insurance company that owns the skyscraper. With an entrance on Virgen de los Peligros street, 2, the La Unión and Fénix Español Building was constructed by Modesto López Otero in 1929 and is inspired by the art deco style of American buildings: reinforced concrete structure, white stone facades, glazed windows… leaving behind the previous building, the Palacio de Torrecilla from the eighteenth century.
