Why is Petit Palace Posada del Peine in Madrid special?

Registered as a lodging business since 1610, the Petit Palace Posada del Peine is Spain's oldest hotel. Its strategic proximity to the royal mail reception point made it a very convenient for travellers arriving by carriages and coaches. Once in their rooms, they found a true luxury for the time: the comb of the Posada del Peine (peine means comb). It's here that our accommodation begins an intimate relationship with Madrid and its travellers that has endured over the centuries, with legends like room 126, which was used to hide fugitives, or the inn's ghost, represented by a lady dressed in black who has appeared to different guests. The current Petit Palace Posada del Peine is composed of three different buildings, with the most modern one (from the 19th century) located at the corner, decorated with tiles and mythological motifs. It admirably preserves many original elements that any visitor can appreciate, such as the wooden beams in the reception or the brick walls. The stone floor of the reception is the same floor that was used in the original cobblestones of the Plaza Mayor. The staircase structure and the stained glass used in the 17th-century renovation with the Posada del Peine's coat of arms are original. The hand-painted tree observed in the reception extends through all floors and rooms, blossoming on the fifth floor. The hotel's beautiful facade, adorned with rich ornamentation, is protected for its heritage value, with the clock located in a small temple added to the architectural ensemble in 1892 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America. The breakfast cellar connects to a network of tunnels and water passages that lead to the Royal Palace. Without a doubt, 400 years allow for many stories, legends, and events.

What are the main places of interest located around the Hotel Petit Palace Posada del Peine?

Perfectly situated since its foundation, Postas Street proves to be a very suitable starting point for exploring nearly all the points of interest in the centre of Madrid, as the hotel is adjacent to the Plaza Mayor and very close to the Puerta del Sol and the Royal Palace, among other places of interest. There are a thousand plans to make from here. The Plaza Mayor will allow you to delve into the history of its main sites (the Casa de la Panadería, the Arco de Cuchilleros, and the statue of Felipe III), as well as stopping at small bars where you can try the typical calamari sandwich (La Ideal, La Campana, and Arrabal). The Mercado de San Miguel is a must-visit to admire the exterior of this iron building and the numerous tapas and gourmet products establishments you'll find inside. And if you're staying at Spain's oldest hotel, you should also experience dining at the world's oldest restaurant, Restaurante Botín (Calle de Cuchilleros, 17), as attested by the Guinness World Records.
