The 19th century solidified portraiture as one of the most prolific sources for representing social change. The exhibition presents an unprecedented collection of portrait phenomena at the dawn of modernity.

Simultaneously, the arts' move towards realism led to depictions of figures with increasing naturalism. However, certain conventions persisted, which even in photography, denote the use of procedures and codes that this exhibition allows us to identify and interpret.

This is the first exhibition organized in Spain dedicated exclusively to 19th-century portraiture in all its forms and techniques: painting, sculpture, medallic art, miniatures, watercolors, drawings, etchings, lithography, and photography. This has been made possible thanks to the richness and variety of the collections at the Museo Nacional del Prado.
