December is approaching and with it, one of the biggest events in Salamanca, the University New Years Eve. You probably heard already about this event, where every year, a few weeks before the end of the year, a large party is held in the Plaza Mayor of Salamanca to which people come from all parts of Spain.
The University’s New Year’s Eve was spontaneously born ten years ago, when a group of students decided to meet in the Plaza Mayor to farewell the New Year a few days in advance. The main reason was to celebrate “the last night of the year” with classmates and roommates before everyone returned to their hometowns for Christmas.
Year after year, this funny celebration has been gaining more and more fans. Last year, nearly 45,000 people according to organizers, attended the celebration. In any case, the fact is that today it has become an important date in Salamanca, with people from other towns of Spain attending, and not only students!
It is usually held within the university’s period of classes, and it is always celebrated on a Thursday since it is unofficial party night for students. This year the University New Years Eve will take place on the 11th of December. On this day, the Plaza Mayor will be equipped with all the necessary equipment regarding music, sound and lightening day will be mounted in the Plaza Mayor an entire infrastructure of music and sound to celebrate the holiday in style.
If you visit Salamanca to celebrate the University’s New Year don’t forget to take the 12 sweets that traditionally are eaten here instead of the traditional 12 grapes. And, of course, the cotillion should not be missed.
