Since the 1st of May, the best tennis players in the world are in Madrid to enjoy one of the most important clay tournaments of the professional circuit, only behind the Grand Slam Roland Garros, the Mutua Madrid Open. This is the 14th edition of the tournament, which will continue until the 10th of May, when the final will be held.

The best players of both the ATP and WTA circuit are in Madrid since days to attend the event. The tournament promises to be one of the most exciting of the year, although there are some notable absences, such as Serbian Novak Djokovic, currently number 1 on the ATP Tournament, who announced weeks ago that he would not be attending in order to recover and prepare the coming season.

Rafael Nadal is once again, one the candidates to win the Mutua Madrid Open, as he has done in 4 previous occasions, including last year’s edition. If he wins again this year, it will be his third victory in a row.

Other players that will also be taking parting in the tournament include Roger Federer, ranking number 2 on the ATP and a probable winner together with Andy Murray (ATP number 4) and David Ferrer (number 5).

On the women’s side there is also a huge expectation in Madrid to find out if the current number 1 WTA player, American Serena Williams, will continue ranking in the first position. Last year, the winner was Maria Sharapova, seeded number 6, who will try to revalidate her title this year. Other possible winners are Na Li, polish Agniezka Radwasanka and the Serbian Jelena Jankovic.

The location chosen for the tournament is the Caja Magica in Madrid, one of the most modern tennis facilities in the world, which is equipped with innovative technology that allows to adapt its spaces to play matches open air or covered up, due to its mobile roofing.
