Summer afternoons at the Prado Museum

Although it may appear that Madrid in the summer reduces its activity (many locals look for the cool breezes of the coast of Spain) in fact, the capital becomes much more alive and offers the visitor the possibility to escape the sultry weather during the month of August with many different plans. The one we offer today is a cultural proposal and takes place at the Prado Museum.

Perfectly connected with the hotels of Petit Palace in Madrid, one of the most important art galleries in the world has a very interesting programme, which continues throughout the summer. What better way to avoid the heat of the central plateau than to assist cultural and didactic workshops or visit the collections in exhibition? Today we are going to explain in detail how to spend a unique afternoon surrounded by all the art at the Prado.

Although you need time (between 1 and 3 hours minimum) remember that the permanent collections at the Prado Museum contain unique works with an obligation to view such as El Lavatorio by Tintoretto, La Anunciacion by Fra. Angelico, El Jardin de las Delicias by Bosco, Las Meninas by Velazquez, Los Fusilamientos by Goya or the most beautiful works by El Greco (works which we recommend you view as close to as possible to be able to appreciate the incredible technic of illumination of the paintings creating points of light which in some works seem to be totally real).

You have already seen the permanent exhibitions and prefer to enjoy the temporary shows of the national gallery? No problem, you can visit throughout the whole month of August the great exhibitions that are there until September.

If you decide on this plan you will have to choose between the exhibition created from the Exhibition of Placido Arango, with works of Zurbano and Goya or that called 10 Picassos of the Kunstmuseum of Basel. They have compiled 10 unique works of the artist from Malaga where you can appreciate the evolution of his pictorial production (that which dates from 1906 to 1967).

Another ideal plan to enjoy during an August afternoon at the Prado Museum, apart from visiting such emblematic areas as the Puerta del Sol or the Paseo del Prado, is to assist one of their cultural and didactic workshops, such as el Prado en Verano: A Collection of Collections.

Have you finished your route and you still have a few hours to satiate your artistic curiosity? The Prado Museum is just a few metres from other excellent museums such as the Thyssen Bornemisza Museum or the National Art Centre Queen Sofia Museum, so rest assured that art abounds in Madrid and almost in every corner.
