In this article we want to offer you some indispensable plans you cannot miss in Madrid during the festivities of San Isidro, patron of the city. This festivity is celebrated around the 15th of May and it is one of the most important traditions of the capital, during which you will discover the most genuine Madrid.

One of the most important traditions during these festivities consists of visiting San Isidro hermitage on the morning of the 15th of May. A large number of residents of Madrid, dressed like ‘chulapos’ and ‘chulapas’, with the traditional regional attire, make a pilgrimage to the saint’s hermitage, located close to Manzanares river. Once there and according to the tradition, people drink water from San Isidro spring, where according to the legend the saint brought about a miracle, managing water to spring out from the rocks.

Afterwards, people have a good ‘cocido Madrileño’ -a typical dish which includes soup, meat and vegetables- in any of the stands of regional food you will find in San Isidro prairie, close to the hermitage. Besides, this is a good occasion for you to taste other typical dishes, like the rosquillas(typical doughnuts), the ‘torraos’ (roasted chickpeas) or the ‘garrapiñadas’ (caramelised dry fruit).

It is also typical to dance a ‘chotis’, Madrid’s regional dance. If you visit Madrid on these dates you will surely find some ‘chulapo’ and ‘chulapa’ dancing this funny dance in the centre of the capital. Besides, you will enjoy some street shows like the passacaglia with giants and carnival figures with oversized heads, which entertain people who join the party.

And for those who want to party until late night, one of the best plans is to go to any of the outdoor night parties organised in different areas of the city. One of the most popular ones is the San Isidro party, also celebrated in the saint’s prairie.

The bullying fair of San Isidro is one of the most important events during these dates, organised in Las Ventas bullying ring. This fair brings together the best bullfighters of the city in what is considered one of the most complete bullfights of the season.

San Isidro festivity is an ideal occasion for you to discover a new side of the city, different to the cosmopolitan and modern Madrid. This is the most traditional, popular and genuine Madrid.
