It is a myth that if you’ve had enough of the beach there is no point in going on that Summer holiday you were thinking of booking. No, Summer is not only  ‘not finished’ but continues to be enjoyed in many parts of Spain just as much as when it first began. Out of all of the different places, Malaga is one of those that stands out and in this Andalusian province the Summer season continues to offer more.

In addition to being the best time to enjoy the endless beaches of the Costa del Sol (the tourist crowds disappear as if by magic), September is the month of the final festivals of the year and the final folk events of the true Malagan villages. Although it’s a long list, in the Petit Palace we are going with the Boquerón Fair, which takes place in the province and is one of the most enjoyable and delicious cultural and gastronomic events.

The Boquerón Fair is celebrated from the 23rd to the 25th of September in Rincon de la Victoria, a village that adds its beauty, stateliness and grandeur to the whole of Malaga. Located about 14 kilometers from the centre of Málaga (about 20 minutes if we leave from the Petit Palace Plaza Málaga), Rincón de la Victoria is the main exponent of the Malagan “boquerón”, the province’s most important fish and the one that gives its inhabitants the name of “boquerones”.

Leaving behind the hotel Petit Palace Plaza Málaga and heading towards the southernmost part of the province, Rincón de la Victoria, emerges as if by magic with its kilometers of beach and unique natural light. A light which surrounds you when you have a simple walk through Boquerón Fair, which is situated between its exclusive seafront and the old railway station.

Blending culture, religion and folklore with Flamenco and pagan touches, this fair which is part music and part food fair, brings us closer to the more authentic side of Malaga: the one that shows the true Malaga, without artificiality or tourist make-over’s.

Making wise decisions

Although you can enjoy the pleasure of this fair almost any time of day, there is nothing like visiting it at noon since it is just after 12.30 when the embers begin to heat on which minutes later they will brown the strips of anchovies. Trying them fresh out of the fire is a true dining experience to be recommended.
