Although for many to discuss Bilbao is to refer to a great capital, full of modern constructions, actually the capital of the Basque country has a large green area. The fresh, humid climate makes the environment worthy of admiration both in tone and composition.
What is the best way to enjoy this, covering every metre of these outstanding natural areas? Without a doubt by preparing a good hiking session throughout such places as the Pagasarri, the highlight of the so-called “green ring of Bilbao”. So, if you have chosen an hotel in Bilbao by Petit Palace and want to disconnect from everything and everyone, put on your sports shoes, pick up your rucksack and start the ascent with energy.
Relatively near to the nerve centre of Bilbao the ascent of the Pagasarri is part of the “top” hiking routes in the Basque country; a place frequented by locals and visitors who wish to practice a healthy sport and at the same time enjoy nature in its’ pure state.
A charming area that can be reached fairly easily and quickly, thanks to good signalization and maintenance.
Ideal to follow alone or with the family, the ascent of the Pagasarri starts at the leisure area of Igertu (the ideal place to park your means of transport) then follow the route which will take us to the leisure zones of Pagasarri and Gangoiti, an outstanding wood of pine trees which form an authentic fairy-tale wood. If you wish to reach the top, take a detour and crown the Gangoiti, because only for the visits, it is worth the time invested.
Make sure you enjoy yourself taking photos from outstanding places such as the leisure area of Artepea and also…. take advantage to breath fresh air and recuperate energy because at this point (if you have travelled at a good rhythm of a more or less experienced hiker) you will have been ascending for about two hours. Once you have arrived at Artepea it is good news because the top of the Pagasarri is just 5 minutes away.
You will know when you have arrived at the highest point of the Pagasarri because in front of you will be a panoramic view of Bilbao, to take your breath away. Here you have to take off your rucksack, sit on the grass, breath and enjoy all the beauty you can contemplate around you.
Take a deep breath because the descent is equally as hard but we can guarantee that once you are back to urban ground in Bilbao, your mind and spirit will have extra energy to discover every nook of the city.
