There are many ways to discover the city of Barcelona, on foot, bicycle, from the rooftops, by boat and of course, from the air. A great way to view the city from a bird’s point of view and enjoy its amazing view is to jump on Barcelona’s funicular, or in fact funiculars as there are two. An unforgettable experience that is also a perfect plan to do with children.
In Barcelona there are two funiculars, although many people think that it is the same one. One of them is the Port’s funicular, which connects the Port of Barcelona with Miramar, in the mountain of Montjuïc. It covers a distance of roughly 1,300 metres that take approximately 10 minutes. The other is the Montjuïc funicular which connects the Park of Montjuïc to the Castle of Montjuïc.
You can enjoy fantastic views of the city from either funicular, showing the visitor an alternative way of seeing Barcelona and contemplate its most iconic buildings from another perspective. An experience that can be shared with the whole family and it is an activity that will be enjoyed by both children and adults.
The Port’s funicular has three stations, first the Tower of Miramar, the second is the Tower of Jaime I and the third is the Tower of San Sebastian. At first, it was designed to connect the International Exposition of Barcelona in 1929 (celebrated on the mountain of Montjuïc) with the seaside. However, the construction works took over two years and was not completed in time for the Expo.
On the other hand, the Montjuïc funicular was inaugurated in 1970 with the idea of providing an alternative form of transport to the highest point of the mountain. The funicular has 3 stations located in the Park of Montjuïc, a second station at Montjuïc’s viewpoint and the last one, on the castle at the top of the mountain.
If you are thinking about a plan to enjoy an escapade to a city, don’t hesitate any longer and come to Barcelona and enjoy its funiculars. The city of Barcelona has numerous attractions to enjoy it alone, with family or groups of friends.
If you are travelling to this beautiful city, we recommend that you stay at one of Petit Palace’s hotels in Barcelona, from where you will be able to visit iconic locations such as the Boqueria Market and Paseo de Gracia.
