During these days, you can see people dressed up in all types of costumes throughout the city of Valencia.

The origins of Carnival dates back to pagan holidays some 5,000 years ago, and are celebrated just before lent, that is 40 days before Easter. Over time, this celebration has spread in different ways around the world. In Spain, for example, the Carnivals of Cadis or Tenerife are specially famous, but in cities like Valencia they are growing consistently in size.

One of the areas in Valencia in which Carnival is celebrated in a special manner is Ruzafa. This central neighbourhood organizes every year the Carnival Russafa Cultura Viva, a cultural event that involves both citizens and local businesses and to which everyone is invited.

You can’t miss one of the most important events, that takes place on the balconies of the neighbourhood, one of the main features of this celebration in Ruzafa. Balconies become the space for the exhibition of the works of artist in Valencia, that take the opportunity to bring art to the streets.

But that’s not all, the balconies of this neighbourhood also become the perfect place to perform theatre pieces with a social protest theme. As a novelty for this year, there will also be a musical performance that impregnates the city with happiness and joy.
